My favorite place to get a drink and anything mac&cheese related. The food is always perfect, and I don’t say that lightly. Izzy is an amazing server. She really helped make the experience. The manager, Amanda, was extremely attentive. Love this place. It’s a must-stop neighborhood spot.
Overview
Walking into Cheesie’s Pub & Grub - Lakeview feels like stepping into a Chicago comfort zone where grilled cheese dreams are taken seriously and nobody pretends diner food has to be fancy to be unforgettable. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long evening nearby, and every visit confirms why this spot has earned its reputation among locals and visitors alike. Located at 958 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60657, United States, it’s the kind of place you remember the next day not just because of the food, but because of how easy it is to settle in and stay longer than planned.
The menu leans hard into indulgence, and that’s clearly intentional. Grilled cheese is the headline, but the variations are what keep people talking. One of my go-to orders is often described by staff as melty chaos in the best way, and that’s not marketing fluff. The bread is always toasted evenly, the cheese pulls are real, and the add-ons like pulled pork, buffalo chicken, or tomato soup on the side turn a simple sandwich into a full-on meal. According to data from Technomic’s consumer foodservice reports, comfort-driven menu items like grilled cheese continue to rank among the top late-night cravings in urban areas, and Cheesie’s execution shows exactly why.
What stands out is consistency. I once chatted with a line cook during a slower afternoon visit, and he explained how they stick to strict prep standards for bread grilling times and cheese blends to keep flavors balanced. That process-driven approach matters. It’s similar to methods highlighted by the National Restaurant Association, which emphasizes consistency as a key factor in repeat customer satisfaction. You can taste that discipline here, whether you’re ordering at noon or well past midnight.
The pub side of the experience deserves just as much credit. The beer selection rotates enough to stay interesting, and the cocktails are straightforward without being boring. I’ve seen groups come in just for drinks and end up ordering food because the smells drifting from nearby tables are impossible to ignore. Reviews online often mention the laid-back vibe, and from personal experience, that’s accurate. Servers are quick, casual, and honest about recommendations. One bartender once steered me away from over-ordering with a laugh, calling one sandwich a rookie mistake if you’re not ready for the portion size.
Lakeview has no shortage of diners, bars, and late-night spots, which makes Cheesie’s popularity even more impressive. Yelp and Google reviews consistently highlight value for money, especially considering Chicago’s competitive food scene. A 2023 BrightLocal survey found that over 90% of diners read online reviews before choosing where to eat, and this place clearly benefits from word-of-mouth built on real experiences rather than hype.
There are limitations worth noting. Seating can get tight during peak hours, especially on weekends, and if you’re looking for lighter or health-focused options, the menu isn’t designed for that. But that honesty is part of the charm. Cheesie’s doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s a pub and grub joint that knows its lane and stays in it confidently.
For anyone exploring Lakeview locations or building a list of reliable Chicago diners, this spot earns its place. The food delivers, the atmosphere feels familiar even on a first visit, and the experience matches what the reviews promise. Every time I leave, usually full and slightly regretful in the best way, I’m already planning the next order.

Went here before seeing a show at the Vic. Nice place and very cool atmosphere. We had some amazing cheeseballs and just stopping by and not reserved seats. Good place and would recommend
If you ever thought you wanted to take a grilled cheese to another level, Cheesie’s is that place! I think we had the Tenderizer and the Classic sandwich. And of course we had to get the fried pickles and the Loaded Tots as well. It opens earlier in the day but it’s very chill bar & grill vibes. Order at the counter, find a table, and they bring your food to you.
Excellent grilled cheese. Had the OG. Not a fan of American cheese but was delicious with amazing bread cooked perfectly. Sides were average. Chili tasted like watered down Hormel but I like Hormel. Tomato soup was good, thick with nice flavor. Tots were excellent. Cooked to perfect crispiness. It is a bar at heart so floor and table were a little sticky. Music was a little loud for the middle of the day with only 6 customers. Will go back to try some other cheesy options.
The staff was fantastic - Amanda (bartender) and Jack (server/area guru) - and the food was delish! $10 for a Ketel One in Chicago?! So cheap!!! Must go!!!
So good. You have to try the grilled cheese. Balboa 5/5 Tenderizer 5/5 Deep fried peanut butter dessert 4/5 Service staff 5/5 Cleanliness 4/5 Would be back for sure
I would have given them 5 stars of they had the cider listed on the chalk board (meaning we were so disappointed and would not have been as much if we had seen they were out )
